I'm pleased to share with you a story of tremendous success from last night. For the sixth time in the past seven years, our students defeated a BDS resolution at UCSB. This doesn't happen out of nowhere. It is a testament to the many months my staff and I have spent working with our students to reach this day.
We are able to do this essential work thanks to your support. If you would like to give a special gift to celebrate and enable us to be there for our students, even around the clock like last night, please click here

BDS Resolution Defeated at UCSB
Thursday, April 11, 2019
Dear Friends of Santa Barbara Hillel:
Early this morning the Associated Student Senate at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) voted against a resolution calling upon the university to divest from certain companies doing business in Israel. The student senate voted 10-14-0 against the resolution in a secret ballot.
We are extraordinarily proud of our students for their resolve and integrity in the months, weeks and days leading up to tonight’s vote. They gave everything they had to fight this anti-Israel resolution. Pro-Israel students fought for the moral and intellectual integrity of UCSB and they succeeded. They rallied an impressive campaign to urge senators to vote against the resolution and reached out to campus allies and our community partners. Santa Barbara Hillel has supported these students every step of the way.
The meeting lasted ten and a half hours, beginning at 6:30pm on Wednesday, April 10, and concluding at 4:52am on Thursday, April 11 when the final vote was tallied and announced.
Santa Barbara Hillel and our campus partners will not allow messages of hate to tear apart our campus community or to isolate Jewish students because of their religious or ethnic identities or because they support the State of Israel. The pro-Israel community of UCSB remains committed to being part of the solution. Santa Barbara Hillel will continue to create a community that supports peace and honest dialogue and that works to make our campus, our community and our Jewish homeland safer and more peaceful.
As this has become an annual endeavor, we know we will unfortunately face similar campaigns in the future. These BDS resolutions do not represent the students, faculty or administration of UCSB. We will continue to engage with our colleagues and friends throughout the university to make clear that resolutions like the one defeated today are not reflective of the campus community and go against the anti-BDS messages recently sent by the University of California Board of Regents and Chancellors.
We want to thank our dedicated and wonderful staff for their tremendous commitment to our students and Jewish life at Santa Barbara Hillel. We deeply appreciate Hillel International, the Israel on Campus Coalition and StandWithUs, who provided special support during this difficult time. We also want to give a big thank you to the CJP IACT Initiative, which year after year sustains our Israel engagement programming and enables us to inspire the Jewish future.
We are happy now to turn our attention to the important programming Santa Barbara Hillel has planned for the rest of the academic year, including our fun and meaningful Passover Seder and educational events in the coming weeks. Next week we are hosting Lian Najami, the first Arab-Israeli Rhodes Scholar, as she discusses her experiences in Israel and beyond.
Thank you for your continued support of our work. It has affirmed our resolve to keep working to engage Jewish and pro-Israel students throughout the Santa Barbara community.
Shabbat shalom and Chag Sameach,
