  • Insightful Speaker: Karen Wilson

Santa Barbara Hillel is proud to cosponsor the Herman P. and Sophia Taubman Foundation Endowed Symposia in Jewish Studies. Karen Wilson, curator of Jews in the Los Angeles Mosaic, a groundbreaking exhibition on display at the Autry National Center in Griffith Park, will present an illustrated talk on the profound cultural and political impact Jews have made in the development of Los Angeles over the past century and a half.

The event will take place on Thursday, May 30th at 7:30PM at Congregation B'nai B'rith in Santa Barbara.

Jews in the Los Angeles Mosaic tells the story of neighborhoods like Boyle Heights and Fairfax, people like Billy Wilder, Max Factor, and Frank Gehry, and lynchpin industries like the movies and suburban land development. It explores how a growing Jewish community settled, prospered, and helped shape the economy, politics, and culture of a city—and how the diversity and dynamism of Los Angeles have transformed the local Jewish community for the past 160 years.

The Herman P. and Sophia Taubman Foundation Endowed Symposia in Jewish Studies at UC Santa Barbara, a program of the Interdisciplinary Humanities Center, is cosponsored by UCSB Arts and Lectures, Department of Religious Studies, Congregation B’nai B’rith, Jewish Federation of Greater Santa Barbara, and Santa Barbara Hillel.

  • Insightful Speakers: John Connelly and David Nirenberg

Santa Barbara Hillel is proud to cosponsor the Herman P. and Sophia Taubman Foundation Endowed Symposia in Jewish Studies. The next feature event will feature authors John Connelly and David Nirenberg. Connelly and Nirenberg will explore the character of medieval anti-Judaism and the historical changes within Catholic Christianity prior to the mid-twentieth century. They will then assess the significance of the Council and its impact on Catholic and Jewish relations to the present.

The event will take place on Monday, May 6th at 7:30PM at Santa Barbara Hillel.

This event marks the 50th anniversary of the Second Vatican Council and features a dialogue between John Connelly, author of From Enemy to Brother: The Revolution in Catholic Teaching on the Jews, 1933-1965, and David Nirenberg, author of Anti-Judaism: The Western Tradition. The Second Vatican Council signaled a fundamental shift in Catholic-Jewish relations.

  • SB Hillel Students Never Forget

This past Thursday, students gathered at Hillel to listen to local Holocaust survivor, George Rusznak tell his story. The Sanctuary was filled with students who were captivated by George’s story of fear and turmoil, yet there was an overwhelming sense of appreciation and love that George was able to come and share his experience with everyone. After George spoke, everyone moved into the Conference Room for the unveiling of Hillel’s new Holocaust Memorial. The memorial was brought to Hillel from the San Diego Jewish Academy’s Butterfly Project (Zikaron v’Tikvah) and is made up of 322 ceramic butterflies all hand painted by students and community members. The goal of the project is to create 1.5 million ceramic butterflies to remember the 1.5 million children that perished in the Holocaust. The project was inspired by a poem written by Pavel Friendman that was found after the Terezin camp was liberated that reads “…Only I never saw another butterfly. That butterfly was the last one. Butterflies don’t live in here, in the ghetto”. We all had quite the meaningful evening. We thank George and his wife, Julie for joining us and we invite everyone to come and see our butterflies flying free.
